An inexhaustible store and abundance of ideas from the mind of Shoji Satake. The artist renders three-dimensional ceramic sculptures reminiscent of Asian ink-wash landscape paintings. The ink wash painting is often referred to "as literati painting in which the artists used the literal shapes of the objects only as channels through which they can express their emotions, feelings, and thoughts." The artist places great value on spontaneity thus creating a soul. For the Shoji Satake, the soul represents a cornucopia of creative ideas.

Stifel Fine Arts Center

1330 National Road Wheeling WV 26003

The Raku technique involves taking glazed ceramics from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and placing them in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze.

Free.

This two-day workshop with Ken McCollum (1st Place winner of Earth and Fire Exhibition 2023) will be demonstrating how he makes his wall clocks or wall hanging platters. Day one will be creating your own plaster mold that you will take home and use any time after the workshop. Then you will be shown how to form clay using a plaster mold and leave them to dry for day two. Second day will be finishing and decorating your platter by learning the carving and dot technique that Ken uses to finish his pieces. (Limit 12)

Ken McCollum's creative ceramic art work is a process of review and renew. He enjoys creating pieces that are traditional forms with contemporary images incised through a black underglaze, revealing design patterns of images which reflect the content of that particular piece. He has also more recently moved toward a technique of using dotted underglazes on cone 3 stoneware. He develops repetitive layered images using a color dot pattern which created a strong visual dynamic.

Ken received an MFA degree from Edinboro University and taught ceramics and sculpture at Muskingum College for most of his career. He has exhibited his work in regional juried exhibits, universities such as Ohio University and Rio Grande University, at the NCECA Conference, and in the Zanesville Museum of Art.
